beg to differ on the laptops. but i know how to handle them. the used ultra-lights are also ultra-cheap, so who cares if i crush it? tackling defects can be tricky business, though. actually i practice an approach i call 'craptop theory'... that you can pay less by sticking with the same used model. need parts? they're cheap on ebay. this approach got me through hard times when i needed computers and had little cash.

My mother has a routine: Every 5-7 years she heads down the local pawn shop and upgrades her Kirby Vacuum. She spends WELL under the $100 she'd pay for a newer model and gets all the benefits of a high powered expensive machine that lasts years upon years. (being abused by a 12+ person household.)

So I'm going to have to disagree with that one. Buying a Vacuum used can be a very smart buy.

Put shoes and mattresses on my "obvious" list.

I think laptops are fine to buy used, just wipe the hard drive clean install some free spyware and virus protection and you are good to go.

I've had CD players work for over 10 years. If I can get one that's 5 years old for $2 and it works, that's better than spending $20 for a new one to me.

I'd probably buy a used camcorder as well depending on the savings. Nearly everything has the potential of damage, but if it works now, you'll likely get a good price especially because you aren't paying the premium to have the best of the best.
