America’s generation of baby boomers are about to retire, and what is the biggest fear? Is it not having enough hospital beds, or not enough quality senior activities? No, it’s the unfrequented burden that will be placed on government services such as social security and Medicare. Good shares of people who are going to retire have done literally nothing to prepare for it. Everyone knows that they are going to need to eat when they retire, yet very many people just pretend it’s not going to happen! This is just absolute insanity, but it can be explained.

There are many reasons that people just ignore retirement planning. First and foremost, people simply believe that they just will not have enough money to retire. People think that they are so far behind on their retirement planning that there’s nothing you can do to catch up, so people just trick themselves into pretending it’s not going to happen. You probably also don’t want to be remind exactly how far you are behind in savings compared to your peers. Some of your friends might be kicking it in their 401(k) plans while yours is far behind theirs, so you might be tempted just to pretend it’s not there.

Yet others simply lack the knowledge in planning. They don’t know how much to save and where to put the money. People who are uninformed also fear making bad investments, because they do not know much about the stock market or any other potential investments.

Others believe that it’s simply too late to save for retirement, and just give up hope that they can do it. The truth is that it is never too late or too early to start saving for retirement. You might have to catch up by saving more now and spending less later on but it can be done! Ignoring planning all together is your best hope to be living in poverty as a senior adult.

Finally, there are a few people who just will not take responsibility for their future. They think that if they forget about it, someone else will be responsible for their retirement, whether it be Social Security, a company pension, or perhaps their children.

Ignoring the problem is just not the way to go. We’re all going to have to retire some day, so we should enable ourselves to live a life of comfort when that eventful day does happen. I mean, come on, do you really want to have to be a greeter at Wal-Mart at age 75? Of course not, get to it!
