On the reference to "tools" above: hear hear. I'm still using some of my grandfather's carpentry tools because he bought quality and took care of them. Still, you can get minimal with some tools: a gardener I know does practically everything with a "hori hori"-- a sharp trowel-shaped Japanese knife. It's really amazing; while I'm trying to keep track of five implements, he's planting and weeding faster than me, and all with just one tool and his skill. Beautiful minimalism!

I have been leaning more and more towards a minimalist lifestyle for many reasons, for the simplicity, the stress-reduction, and not to mention the environmental and financial impact it has. I had written a post on minimalism, but not to the depth you seem to have gone and I enjoyed your piece. Thank you.

my car is from 1983 but my bicycle is new. i live in a 400sq foot treehouse in a forest with a water view. i guess there's enough natural beauty that buying junk just doesn't appeal to me. nor does buying shiny stuff. i do buy computer equipment, both for my small business and my job. but really i shop pretty carefully for that stuff, and it's worth it not to skimp on your tools. but overall, i live a very minimalist and very active lifestyle.
