"Brick and mortar bad, online good..." is a common thought among young men, spread through the vast sea of misinformation available through online searches for information.
What most people don't realize is that a diamond needs to be mounted by a professional. Often, the online vendors use the cheapest materials and labor to mount the diamonds that they sell. Sure, they look pretty, but, do they do what they are really supposed to?? Will the vendor be around to help when a diamond falls out? This is a dirty little secret that the online vendors hide from you.

Yes, of course they'll replace your diamond, and charge you for it. ...and ask you to claim it on your insurance.
A brick and mortar store with a solid reputation won't necessarily sell to you at a significantly higher price than online if you REALLY do your homework. Compare apples and apples. If you have a problem with your purchase, you can show the person from whom you purchased the ring what the issue is, and in most cases the issue will be addressed at no charge...no shipping or insurance costs, no lengthy waits, no e-mail and phone exchanges trying to explain to someone far away exactly what the problem might be.
Not all B&M stores are in malls. Look for a jeweler who manufactures, and you can find them in the Yellow Pages. These are far different operations than mall stores, and these businesses are run by people who make jewelry. Often, prices reflect a truly fair exchange for your money, and the service is face-to-face, with fantastic quality guarantees.

Sure, any idiot can sell a diamond, and, apparently, there are a lot of idiots online.
There are very few people who can consistently produce a fail-safe engagement ring, and they don't work for the online sellers. If you want to keep your diamond on your fiancé's finger, look for the companies who offer guarantees against stone loss. If they don't, run away as fast as you can.

If the woman doesn't even know you are thinking about proposing you are on shaky ground. If you are serious she should know it.

That doesn't mean that she has to know when it is going to happen. My wife was fairly certin that I hadn't purchased the ring yet when I supprised her with it.

As for exchanges they are always an option, but it is awsome knowing I was able to get the right ring the first time.

I too used blue nile (several items, but also the engagement ring). Even if you want to spend 2 months salary, you'll get a much bigger, clearer diamond online for the same price than you would a store. The store has to pay for such higher costs they are going to have to charge you more.

Citoahc, you assume that the woman knows about your plans to propose to her in advance, this isn't always the case. Some guys would like to be able to bring the ring with them when they propose...you can always return the ring if she really doesn't like it.

If you are just looking for the standard diamond the internet is definitely a good place to look. Personally I would advise anyone go to at least a few stores with you significant other.

My wife and I had a lot of fun searching local stores for the perfect rings to get each other.

CNN.com had an interesting article on engagement rings the other day, specifically on an auction site that helps people who have canceled their engagements get rid of their ring. I don't have the article, but I did save the URL, could be useful to others particularly with the advice in your posting on researching!

http://www.idonowidont.com/auction/
