For the last few days, we’ve been taking a look at what the Bible has to say about money. So far the bible has been very straight forward about the topics of debt and being generous, however investing is a bit more of a peculiar topic. In the last 2000 years, investing have become exponentially more complicated than it was in the days of the ancient roman empire. There was no such thing as the stock market, index funds, currency trading, money market funds, and the like. Despite the dramatic variance in investing between these two time periods, there are some fundamentals truths from the bible that we can learn about investing.

Diversification – First, the bible tells us to diversify our investment. Ecclesiates 11:2 states, “Divide your portion to seven, or even to eight, for you do not know what misfortune may occur on the earth.” This is some great wisdom from Solomon, who is referred to as the wisest man who ever lived. Solomon is telling us that we shouldn’t put all of our investments in one place, but rather in a bunch of different places in case one of our investments happen to fail.

Ethical Investing – Solomon continues his wisdom and states that all of our investments should be ethical. Ecclesiates 12:13 states, “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.” This is great advice for us in all parts of our lives, including investing. It just doesn’t make sense to invest in a company that practices behaviors that are contrary to your moral beliefs.

Seeking Advice – The book of Proverbs is essentially the guide to Christian living, and it has a lot to say about money. Proverbs 15:22 tells us, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established.” When we are investing, we should seek the advice and wisdom of people who are extremely good with money and have a lot of it. Chances are they know a thing or two about making money and we would be wise to follow their advice.

Understanding – We are told that we should only invest in things that we understand in Proverbs 24:3-4, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” This is excellent advice, the best way to get ripped off is by investing in things that you do not understand.

The bible has so much to say on so many different topics. Investing wisely is definitely not a salvation issue, but God offers us a lot of good financial advice about investing anyway, because he wants what’s best for us. We would all be very wise to follow the wisdom of the ages which has been scribed in the Bible.
