Tithe is an old english word meaning tenth. From the days of Abraham, God's people have been giving a tenth of their first fruits (the best that they have and the first money to come in) to the work and mission of God. God commanded Moses to tell the people to follow this law so that the Levites could operate the temple full time and not have to worry about feeding their families in the mean time.

We do the same with our tithe today. It pays church staff, upkeep of facilities and YES, helps the widows and orphans (those in need in your community and world). If your church has no missions outside of itself, run fast to a church that does!

As for the law being "an old law" that we today under the new covenant should not worry about following, Jesus and Paul both spoke often about the tithe and how important this form of worship is. Not only important to God but important to us that we know that what we have is given to us through the GRACE of a benevolent father. We are not giving Him 10% to do His work. He is giving us 90% to do with it as we please.

In the beginning the Word was with God and the Word was God. Jesus was there when the old law was set in place. He came in the flesh to fulfill that law not to abolish it. If you do not tithe, you are not in accordance with God's law. If we manage our money as good stewards, take care of our families and continue his work, a tithe would be no problem at all.

Good Post!

check out epm.org and The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn to fully understand tithing, giving, and materialism. If you really want to go in depth, I recommend Money, Posessions, and Eternity by Alcorn, which I am currently enjoying.

After reading your post i don't seem to understand whether or not you think tithing is commanded for us today? I agree that giving to the work of the ministry is crucial and essential, but i personally don't believe that a ten percent is a minimum or a maximum requirement. http://churchtithesandofferings.com
