Libraries are really an amazing resource. You have thousands of books to read at your finger tips, yet very few people actually make use of them. A lot of people just order books of Amazon because it’s more convenient to do so, but what if you could read free books on your computer for nothing. You wouldn’t even have to leave your chair, and now you can. There’s a new service called WOWIO which allows you to read some very popular books for nothing! It gets even better; if you refer ten of your friends you get a free iPod Shuffle.

Here’s how it works. First, you need an account on their website. The sign-up process is very straight forward, but you do need to prove that you are a US citizen, because of publishing agreements, you can do this by using a using a verified email address, an ID, a credit card number, or a friends and family code. After this minor hassle, you’re asked a couple of simple questions, and you have your account ready to go. Once you have an account created, you’re ready to order books. You can search through their library by category or by searching via title, author, or ISBN number. It’s a really easy process.

The library that they have of books is by far from complete, but there’s no way it could be expected to be. There’s a lot of good stuff worth reading on there though, definitely. If you’re looking for something on there, I suggest reading “The Road to Serfdom” by Friedrich Hayek, great book! Once you download an eBook, you’ll notice that it has ads in it, that’s how they make their money. They’re not too intrusive or anything, so that’s good.

They have had a lot of great offers and contest for scholarships, t-shirts, and the like. Right now they are running a special where if you refer ten of your friends, you can get a free iPod shuffle. So even if you hate reading and swore never to read again after reading to kill a mocking bird only to find out that it contained no advice on killing mockingbirds, you can still use this service to refer ten friends to it and get your free iPod. Be sure you use this referral address (harps@pluto.dsu.edu) when signing up for the account, so that I can get my free shuffle, because my Creative Muvo’s battery case is stuck on with masking tape. Buying AAA batteries isn’t the most fun either!

It’s a very good service overall and definitely worth looking at. Even if you read occasionally, it’s a very convenient source of good free books. Definitely take a look at it over at http://www.wowio.com/
