Book Reviews: Clark Howard’s Clark Smart Real Estate
Clark Howard is an increasingly popular financial guru who has a syndicated talk radio show in the United States. He’s a self made millionaire who made his fortune in out of all places, the travel agency business. He bills him self as a “consumer warrior” and the tag line for his radio show is teaching you to “save more, spend less, and avoid getting ripped off.” His show is based out of Atlanta Georgia, and is syndicated on a number of radio stations nation wide. Howard generally offers very solid advice to his consumers and is now offering advice on real estate, in his new book entitled “Clark Smart Real Estate.”
We were able to get an advanced copy of the book for review, and what we found was definitely some good advice when it comes to real estate. In all of Clark Howard’s books, you’ll find that the theme of the books is not to provide you with some great magical new insight that no one has ever offered before, but rather a nice helping of common sense and practical wisdom that will help you avoid being ripped-off, and make sure that your financial transactions are done in an intelligent manner. Clark Smart Real Estate is no exception.
In the book you’ll find practical advice about a wide variety of sub-topics in real estate. You’ll find information about when it’s appropriate to buy your first home. Clark discusses whether or not it makes sense to buy a pre-existing home, or to have one newly built. Clark also expose what the hidden closing costs are and how you can avoid them. He discusses whether or not it makes to sell your home yourself, or to use a professional realtor.
Perhaps one of the best chapters in the book is the chapter on mortgages. Many consumers are getting into really bad mortgages, and quite often they don’t even know they’re doing it. Clark Smart Real Estate’s chapters on mortgages and refinancing are a breath of fresh air into the otherwise convoluted world of borrowing money for a home. He discusses what types of mortgages you should look at, how one should go about shopping for mortgages, and how to decide whether or not it makes sense to refinance one’s home.
If you are a first time home buyer, or maybe even a second time home buyer, you should definitely read this book. It will provide you a foundation of knowledge which you can use to determine whether or not you are getting a good deal, and that everything is being done in your real estate transaction as it should. It won’t provide you any ground breaking secrets about real estate and make you some sort of guru in the business, but it will provide you a much needed base of information so that you can go into the home-buying process much more informed than the typical homeowner.
