Several years ago I was without income for over a year (in hospital two months, unable to return to work for the next year) and was unable to pay any bills (had to relocate to live with family).

My open accounts (I had some credit cards which I used to fund a business startup (which failed when I got sick) and to make student loan payments) were closed and charged off.

A collection agency has bought most of my unsecured debt and is suing me for the largest debt. (I offered $100/mo, their lawyer's office said they didn't think the client would accept it, and it looks like they didn't find the $100 (yes a money order) I sent them to be sufficient.) It cost me $200 just to file a response to the lawsuit, and I guess the next move is in their court (so to speak).

What should I do now? It's not like I can afford a lawyer but maybe I'll have to pay a lawyer instead of paying them.

Or, you could make some good money on them:

http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/02/suing_telemarke.html

It takes a little investment of time, but it might very well be worth the payout!

Dan

Great question! The first thing that you have to remember is that you're not dealing with a rational human being. You can't simply tell them that the person doesn't live there anymore, they won't accept that.

You really have two options:

(1) Be a huge jerk to them, tell them that you've told them numerous times that the ex-room-mate is no longer there, and that they need to quit harassing you

(2) Change your phone number.

If you don't like the previous room-mate, you could give them your room-mate's new number. That might stop them from calling.

What if I had a roommate that owes money to a collection agency, but she has moved leaving no forwarding address. How do I stop them from mailing and/or calling me?
