During college, i decided to become a tax accountant. I didn't work at all during college nor did i do any Extra-Curricular Activities.

After college, i took a temp job in tax. These type of jobs are guaranteed as long as you have a degree. During this year i concentrated on passing my cpa exam. Once i did, i applied to the big four firms and accepted an offer from Deloitte.

It took me a year to land the job that i want, and it was pretty damn easy and not stressful at all. Not only that, but the temp job allowed me to pass the CPA exam because the temp job was less stressful vs a "real" job. Some of my friends are still struggling to with it.

My advice, enjoy college and live life at your own pace. You DO NOT have to get a "job" after graduation. You will eventually make the 6 figure that you want. Does it really matter that you're a year off?

I think college has become too focused on getting students jobs. Now, while I am all for practical learning. I think the motivation for college shouldn't directly be a job. 90% of the stuff we learn in classes won't even help us in the job.

Instead learning should be encouraged for learning itself. It is a process that never ends.

Also students shouldn't be motivated in ONLY getting a job. For example, business majors could be motivated to start a business, but the college process could make them be happy with just a job.

Encourage the creative/unique/imaginative spirits, don't crush them.

I had internships most the way through college (as a CS major), and I made 3 times as much as a generic service job, plus probably bumped my just out of college salary at least 20 grand. Hows that for taking advantage of what's given to me.

I always tell every still-in-college person I know that they should be taking internships all throughout college.

Internships are a great (if not great paying) way to get inside of a company, see what it's really like, and prove yourself in a way you'll never be able to after you leave college.

It is not uncommon for internships to end in a job offer. Or in the college student deciding that "this is a crappy place to work" and moving on to another internship.

Something else that is helpful, if I may be blatantly self promotional, is having a well-placed mentor.

Dan

I think college graduates should also understand that most of the time you have to start at the bottom. Or get a "foot in the door" job.

And it can take years. During that time, it can be easy to get way over your head in debt b/c you think a higher paycheck is just around the corner. It's often not.

I know that's not glamorous, but it's the lesson many of us have had to learn.
