I can understand wanting to ignore the number. No one should get obsessed over it. Yet, living a credit free life seems quite silly to me.

A credit score is not a red herring worth ignoring. It's a flawed-but-still-useful indicator lenders use to determine risk.

With no credit or bad credit a borrower finds him/herself in some annoying situations. Ever initiate a cell-phone contract or have utilities in your name? Without credit, you'll often be required to pay a serious deposit.

As a lender, I'd want to know that someone is not only able to repay (income + assets) but willing (credit history).

Debt is a powerful thing! In this economy of leverage, you'd be hard-pressed to get through life without credit.

Why wouldn't you want a good credit score? It's not hurting you in any way to have a good one, and it doesn't have to cost any money to get one. Just pay your bills on time, and don't carry a high debt utilization.

And it very well may hurt you to have a bad or nonexistent credit score, even if you never borrow a dime. It can hurt you fairly severely on car insurance rates in many states. Credit scores are not just about credit anymore.

I think like all things, there's a balance. Yes, maybe you can get a mortgage "the old fashioned way", or live without driving a car until you can save up for one. But I think maintaining good credit is a smart thing to do. Wish I had done it earlier.

Why would anyone want to get rid of a credit score? Who cares if some company assigned you a number. If you wait long enough and don't borrow money for long enough, you won't have one.

The article doesn't mention how to get rid of a credit score, just that you can ignore it, and somehow hope that this means other people will ignore it.

And ignoring the assets of the person in their credit score is deliberate and desirable. I don't care if someone has a billion dollars in the bank if they fight tooth and nail to avoid paying it.
