When having a discussion about the bible and money, it’s very easy to discuss how specific areas of money, such as investing and debt are mentioned in the Bible. When it comes down to the very nature of money, why it exists, and how we can make use of it in a biblical fashion, it gets a bit more difficult. Here are some themes that I was able to pull out of the bible when it comes to money.

Remember That Money is Temporary – “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV, Matthew 6:19-21) “Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.” Proverbs 11:4

Don’t make Money too important – “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (NIV, Matthew 6:24-25, 31-33)

Be Honest With Your Money – ‘You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired man are not to remain with you all night until morning. (NAS, Leviticus 19:13) The LORD abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight. (NIV, Proverbs 11:1) He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil– this is the man who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him. (NIV, Isaiah 33:15-16)

Save Some of Your Money – Proverbs 21:20 “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.”
Budget Your Money – Luke 14:28 “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it.” Does Jesus really want me to save up and pay for the things I buy?

Bless others with your money – “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:11. “The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.” Psalm 37:21
