A lot of people wind up with very good coupons for whatever reason, but have absolutely no use for them. After I bought my Dell Dimension Desktop, I got a nice coupon for 35% off another one, but I just bought a new computer, so I had absolutely no use for it. None of my friends or family were planning on purchasing a new computer system any time in the near future, so I thought I would try to sell it online, and here are a few things that I learned in the process.

Sell Your Coupon at the Right Time – This is the classic law of supply and demand, sell your coupon when there are fewer of them out there. When Dell is offering some really great deals, you probably won’t get as much for your coupon. If there are a lot of other auctions with similar coupons up, you also might not get as much. If you coupon is good for six months or longer, consider waiting until there are fewer coupons up for grabs on eBay.

Short Auctions – Usually having a shorter auction is a better idea than a longer auction because of the time-sensitive nature that coupons have. If you have a bad buyer who doesn’t pay, you don’t want to be out of luck with it. You want to have time to re-list your auction if the winner doesn’t pay.

Know the Rules – eBay rules state that you actually have to mail the coupon to the recipient. They pay very close attention to the manufacturer’s coupon rules, and won’t let you just email the code to the recipient. Make sure that you’re following eBay’s policies and the terms of the coupon, otherwise your auction might be removed.

Restrict Buyers – Don’t let anyone with a very negative eBay rating, or no eBay rating, bid from you. Often times these are other people selling similar items to yours who do not want the competition. EBay lets you block bidders based on their feedback, and you should take advantage of this if someone is bidding on your item that you do not believe will pay.

Follow Good eBay Practices – The same rules as other auctions apply to selling coupons on eBay too. Be honest about what you are selling, include any pictures that you have, don’t inflate the cost of shipping, and include any wordage from the manufacturer.

If you get a good coupon that you’re not going to use, chances are you can get a decent amount of money for them by throwing it on eBay. This way it won’t go to waste, and you’ll get some money back for it.
