It’s hard to imagine that there was a time when nobody had computers, cell-phones, or any of today’s modern conveniences, yet people seemed to get by just fine! It makes one wonder if perhaps we could simplify our lives by getting rid of some of these modern “conveniences.” Chances are we could save a lot of money in the process too! Let’s ask ourselves, do we really need our cell-phones?

We’re able to call just about everyone from anywhere. If we have a question for someone we can just whip out our cell-phones and take care of it then and there. We can chatter all we please without friends, and do it for just about $50.00 a month. MarketWatch recently did a study of cell-phone users and found that men will talk on average of 546 per minutes on their cell-phones and women will talk for about 470 minutes. We’re certainly making use of them, but that doesn’t mean they’re a necessity.

Cell-phones make it so people can call us anytime and anywhere, which is not always a good thing. Vacations aren’t nearly as much fun when people from work are calling and asking you questions about things. When people know they can contact you at anytime, chances are they’ll make some pretty good use of it. Sometimes a little bit of solitude is a very nice thing, and not having a cell-phone will take you a long way in doing that! If you don’t have a cell-phone, other’s can’t have an expectation to immediately contact you, and you’ll be able to enjoy some peace and quiet.

There’s also the cost. Chances are it would be a lot cheaper just to have a regular phone line with long distance than to pay out for a cell-phone plan. You can probably get a decent long distance package for $20.00 a month from your local phone provider, but will have to spend at least $40.00 for any sort of decent cell-phone plan. If you have one of those unlimited plans like my fiancé, you could be paying upwards of $100 a month just for cell-phone plan! Only talking on a land-line would make that cost dramatically less.

Cell-phones certainly are a convenience in some cases, but the real question is a matter of need. If you travel a lot and don’t have access to a land-line, a cell-phone might make sense. If you just go on a family vacation once a year, and that’s about it for traveling, you probably don’t need one, and it’s okay to admit that and say it out loud.
