I appreciate your post, but I am wondering if you think it is okay to borrow more money for graduate/professional degrees. I am currently in my second year of medical school. Tuition at my school is over $40,000/year, and most students, including myself, take out additional loans for living expenses. It is all but impossible to work at all during medical school, especially during the clinical years. When I finish school, I will have over $200,000 in student loan debt. I am fortunate in that I didn't have to take out any loans for my undergraduate degree, but many students have additional loans from college that they are bringing in from undergrad. It also isn't possible to take a semester off of med school to work. Although we will all have very good salaries once we finish residency, most of us will make around $40,000/year during our residencies, which last anywhere from 3-7 years. Only then will our salaries increase to what a "doctor" typically makes, but few of us will come anywhere near making twice our student loan debt in a year. Any advice?
