I've found that I only carry $50 to $100 at a time. I use cash for when I order food or go out to eat with friends (which makes things easier...there's almost always someone using a card, and that always makes things confusing). Plus, living in Boston, I might need to catch a cab home after the subway closes, and so it's good to have a bit of money on hand for that as well.

Geez. $250 seems like a lot of money to be walking around with. I don't think I ever have as mush as $10 in my wallet. Then again I live in San Diego and I can't remember the last time I needed cash.
