Dealer inventory reports are often inaccurate. When we bought our car the dealer's website claimed they had cars in stock that they did not. The number one piece of advice is don't buy anything that the finance manager tries to sell you. None of it is worth what you're going to pay and they mislead you by telling you what it's going to cost per month instead of what the actual cost is. Actually the number one piece of advice is that car sales is a sleazy business. Keep that in mind at all times. Most (not all, but most) of the people at a dealership will tell you whatever you want to hear. There's a very real chance that you will know more about the cars then they do.

Getting outside financing is not always going to be a better deal. Some excellent promo rates can be had that a bank or credit union isn't going to be able to match. If you are going to pay cash or you have outside financing I'd keep that information to yourself as long as possible. They may be willing to give you more of a break on the price if they think they can make the money back on financing.

I'd also add as a step:

Once you decide on a vehicle model, go to consumer reports (website) and buy the pricing report for that particular car.

I saved about $500 net on a small investment in this report when I bought my '06 Scion xA.
