RV,

It's not an exact science. Generally I would think that as long as your mortgage + insurance + association fees + taxes isn't above 30%, you're doing fine. Some people get in the range where their house payment is 50% of their takehome pay, and they just don't have room to breathe financially...that's not where you want to be.

Koda - Good advice!

Good info but people need to know what problems areas to look for in a house, before they make an offer and hire an inspector. In fact many inspectors fail to report problems. BuySmallHouse.com has lots of info on what to look for.

When you say, the payment should be no more than a quarter of your take-home pay, did you mean to say,a quarter of monthly's take home-pay?

Does this include only the monthly mortgage or should it be a combined payment of monthly mortgage + Insurance + Association + Taxes?

Cheers
