The main purpose of the HOA is to take care of the common areas using the fees that people pay each year as themembers. They SHOULD NOT looking into other people's property to find little mistakes for criticism. But now aday there are a lot of HOA DICTATORS or CONTROL FREAKS out there, who think that they are kings of the world and like to harass or discriminate the homeowners if they don't like them for any reason. Do not let those dictators come onto your property, they are not allowed to. I wish that the Government will look into this more seriously to protect the homeowners from being abused by the HOA DICTATORS; and make the law to let people get out of the HOA if they have inadvertently joined by mistake, or don't want to be a member any more without having to move. The Government should NOT give a lot of power to the HOA officials, and should NOT allow them to freely foreclose people's home without appearing to court and prove that the money that they claim the homeowners owe them are true and legal. In addition, the Goverment should punish those HOA DICTATORS if they continue to abuse and harass the innocent homeowners for insignificant or no reasons.

Well, Write to your State Attorney General's office. Have your neighbors do the same thing as well. If you can get the phone number....call, call, and call again. Look into your state laws governing HOA's and make copies. Hand them out and hang them up. Keep a notebook, just for infractions your board are doing, and send copies, sighting the complaints, the laws they are breaking, and send them to your State Attorney General's office. For over 5 years now we have had major problems with our board, the monies, and even vote tampering......The State Attorney General's office is compiling all our complaints and will be comming into our association by the end of the year. Just remember.....the more people that get involved...the better your chances of being heard!

My community has a Hoa. Noone knows Who appointed our president. She will give no information on the matter. Myself and many other neighbors are wondering how we can demand a neighborhood vote to elect our own neighborhood Hoa president.

"HOA board members need a life!" I totally agree. I've been living in my condo for 10 years and we've had this evil dictator who's only joy in life is to hand out fines to all the neighbors. I like my neighbors, love my neighborhood, but the HOA Board is ridiculous. Trash day is Friday and I put my cans out Thursday night, left for a business trip and got back Wednesday. Got a notice with a fine for not bringing trash cans back in within 48hrs. My neighbor got a fine for "unauthorized" guest space parking when his mom came to visit. He wanted her car in his garage so he parked his in the guest spot for a week. His fine was $25/day x 6 days! We are currently in the process of calling a special meeting to have her removed from the Board. Only problem is that we are 24 units and no one else wants to be on the Board with those anti-socials.

First we loose the BILL OF RIGHTS and now we have before us is an HOA, which has nothing to do but REGULATE, RESTRICT, AND REMOVE even more freedoms we all fought for.
I wouldn't recommend ANYONE to live in one of these places.....and knowing that the CC&R's which define what an HOA has "authority" over, are not provided until the very last minute at escrow signing (or only accessed via a computer) has a HUGE FLAG RAISED due to it's inaccessable nature.
Don't do it, folks.......there are so many people in this country that have been screwed by these NAZI bored and angry folks, you wouldn't belive it. HOA board members need a life!

It's amazing how much of these other comments are so familiar to me and I can see how our association is heading down the same road. Our association started about ten years ago, but the very people that started it have all moved on and in their place are gung-ho folks that are retired and looking for something to keep them busy so they are involved in the association to police the neighborhood. It is becoming a nightmare.

We too are going through hell with an association. It is the same operators for years, basically since inception as this was not always an association. They have misappropriated funds, intimidate with threats of lawsuits, blantantly lied to the membership to have them sign on to an expensive water system which over half million dollars is not accounted for & has disappeared. Anyway I could go on & on. The big problem is that there are not any agencies to oversee association abuse or to make sure they follow state & federal law.

I was unaware of the HOA when I bought the house I now live in. Had I known, I certainly would have looked elsewhere. Their harassment began with letters stuffed into my mailbox, messages about leaving "toys in your driveway". After I advised them that they were violating federal law by putting letters in the mailbox (by taping my message to the front of the mailbox), they sent their diatribes by mail. At one point, they charged me $30 for the "privilege" of receiving a certified letter from their board. They've ragged on me for letting my grass grow (never really overgrown, just 2 weeks instead of 1 between mowing),leaving my lawn sprinkler out, having a bench and table on my front lawn without having paid them $10 to look at my application to have those, and the best yet, posing a "danger to a child riding his bike" under my crape myrtle trees. Yeah. A branch might fall on a kid as he rides underneath. A friend who was unemployed is being threatened by this same bunch for failure to pay his HOA dues; they have refused to work with him to pay this off in installments now that he is employed again. What is the message here? "It's not the money, it's the power we want to wield over you"? I told them to their faces at my own "hearing" that I valued the quality of life inside my home more than the property value of homes in the neighborhood. Perhaps the wrong thing to say to them but certainly how I feel. If I believed in hell, I would consign them to it.

The more I read about the sufferings of many innocent people who have been mistreated by their HOAs, the more it makes me feel sorry. I wish that there is a way we can get rid of those HOAs, or there will be a law to protect the innocent homeowners. I've heard there are a lot of HOA board DICTATORS out there who think that they are very powerful and like to control and create problems for the innocent homeowners. They try to dictate people, take away our freedoms, create a lot of pains, cost us a lot of money and possibly lose our homes. I found it's ridiculous that they don't give us a mortgage, don't pay for our property, but could foreclose our homes to collect a few hundred dollars that they claim we owe them. To prevent from having a heart attack and a lot of headaches in the future, I would never ever want to move into an area that has HOA. They can do us more harms than good. HOA is NOT worth it.

HOAs write by-laws that allow them to act like Nazi's and once on the board they bring in their like-minded friends to sit amongst them. The Rockhill HOA in Herndon Virginia using Cardinal Management can ignore all requests for a proper accounting of your HOA dues and how they are applied.

WARNING: DONT MOVE TO ANY COMMUNITY MANAGED BY CARDINAL MANAGEMENT or Rockhill HOA. The HOA uses the attorneys to attack you for any violation.

when is it time to end the HOA? Our townhomes and the neighboring homes are well over 20 years old. It is time to end this outrageous practice. How are these entities shut down?

So!! You don'y care too much for HOA"s . O.K. Different strokes for different folks. but for arguement sake. Lets say, you live in a pretty nice township. You have an investment of about ,anywhere from 150,000 to a 300.000 and you keep it in tip top prime shape but your neighbor or neighbors don't do the same its a shame that the people that would see your home don't !!! For the mess around your house. That is not yours!!!!!!
Personally I don't want to live in a city or state or county or country that don't have LAWS. Because people think that when you buy a piece of property they can do as they feel with it or not do in some cases. If you are an island onto yourself be a Donald trump and don't have too many unwealthy neighbors . Because for the most of us its our biggest investment and it should be yours and should be gorverned with in reason to live in a great township. Lets try to live together !!
I will help you cut your grass if you help me cut mines.

We live in Shadow Mountain Villas and our HOA is run by Nazi's who like to harrass the Homeowners to no end. Time to turn the tables. These people need to have the same consequences that normal people would have.(orders of harrassment against them & lawsuits against them). Do we have any rights to police them the way they do us?

The more I hear about HOAs, the more convinced I am that the "X-Files" episode about one was not an exaggeration.
