I am a living example that every owner should have pet insurance. I am going through a second dog requiring surgery and it is going to cost me about $3,500 when everything is said and done - the last one was about $4,500. I am over my head in debt and cant pay my bills - all because of the animals I love.

http://roxyssurgery.blogspot.com/

While this isn't really "insurance" we take our dogs to the local Banfield clinic (they are usually located in PetSmart). They have a series of plans that you can subscribe to that includes certain annual care. For example, the "basic" plan includes two checkups, annual shots, etc. Then there are higher level plans that include more services that may make more sense as your pet gets older and needs more care. The reason we like the Banfield plan, is that we can pay for all of the care via a monthly debit that we find it to be easier to budget for and the services are discounted because you are purchasing them as a package.

With the plan, all office visits are free, so if you have to stop in for an infection or the like (that is not covered by your plan), you only pay for the tests and treatment. Additionally, you receive a discount on any additional treatment or medicine that is outside the plan. The discount varies depending upon the plan (for example, the basic plan provides a 5% discount, but the most expensive plan provides a 20% discount). Finally, while this isn't really monetary, Banfield typically has weekend and evening hours and since both my husband and I work, this makes it much more convenient because we don't have to take time off from work.

Pets over a certain age cannot get insurance, I know because I tried. My cat is 13 and no one would sell it to me, just an FYI.
