I have a canon MP 780, and from what I can tell when it says its empty it is empty. It has a similar 5 cartridge design, and when you pull out the cartridge the ink well is bone dry.

I will give it a shake next time, but I doubt it will do anything.

Also I don't think companies are in the habit of trying to alienate their customers by making them replace ink as often as possible. Customers will just switch printers. If they are, it makes terrible business sense. IMO

I have a HP photosmart. From my research, it is a very well designed printer. It has 6 separate ink cartridges so I only have to replace one at a time. The print head has a small ink well for each color and when the ink well isn't full you will get the "ink low" message. The printer won't allow you to print in color if one of the cartridges is low (you can still print in black/white). This makes it to where you don't print a picture without any blue ink.
