Intelligent Keys Not So Intelligent After All
Many automobile manufacturers have been sporting out their 2007 models with new advanced entry systems to replace existing car keys. These new keys operate with a proximity sensor and allow the operator to unlock and start his or her vehicle without ever taking their keys out of the pocket. Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota, Mazda, Suziki and Volvo are all offering some sort of keyless entry system as an option in their ’07 line of vehicles. These keys are like a neat technological marvel, but it’s not worth the added pain and hassle they can create when they malfunction.
New intelligent keys,. or I-Keys, make your life a tad bit easier, and they’re fun to show off to your friends. However many owners of new Nissan Altima’s have had a bit of an ironic experience with these keys. Instead of saving them time and effort, it turns out that their I-Keys can break quite easily rendering them useless and making it so that the driver cannot get in and operate their own vehicle.
The Altima’s intelligent key system can be permanently disabled if you leave it in your pocket with certain models of cell-phone. There’s some sort of signal that your cell-phone will receive or send out that renders the intelligent key completely useless. Currently there’s no way to fix this defect, and if you want to replace your intelligent key, you’re going to have to fork over $400 to fix it! Compare that to the few dollars you would pay at a dealer to have a new key made for your vehicle!
Nissan is including these intelligent key problems as part of their factory warranty, so call your dealer if you are affected by this problem. Nissan is currently developing a modified intelligent key that will fix this design flaw that’s to be released later this fall. For the time being, Nissan is recommending that you do not put your intelligent key in the same pocket, and that they should be at least an inch apart from each other at all times.
