Some parts of the world just are not as safe as they used to be. This doesn’t mean we need to panic and take extraordinary measures to keep our families safe, but it does mean that we need to take a few extra precautions here and there to protect our loved ones and our possessions. Most of us probably would not think it’s a good idea for a young woman to walk alone at night or allow our children to spend any extended period of time with any adults that we don’t know or trust. Some individuals in less-safe neighborhood purchase alarm systems and put bars on their window to keep their homes safe. Others are more trusting and have no problem leaving their front door open all the time. The question arises, what should we do to protect our homes when we’re not there?

Many individuals have thought it prudent to purchase burglar alarm systems that alert the police when a disturbance occurs. Unfortunately the vast majority of calls from burglar alarm systems are false alarms and many police officers view them as nothing more than nuisance calls. Generally by the time the police receive the message and arrive on the scene, the criminal is long gone and not much can be done. These alarm systems have been largely ineffective at preventing crime and stopping criminals in their tracks.

Fortunately there are new home monitoring technologies which will help you better protect your home when you are away. A new generation of surveillance cameras is being equipped with artificial intelligence and will alert you if a genuine disturbance occurs. These cameras have motion sensors and can detect whether or not something is occurring within its field of vision, some of these cameras can even filter out potential false alarms such as pets that are roaming the home.

When some sort of genuine disturbance does occur, the camera will interface with your computer system and send you an email or text-message alerting you that some sort of intrusion has occurred. If you receive the email from your surveillance system, they will include pictures of what’s going on inside of your home. You’ll then be able to see if it’s just the neighbor’s bringing in some fresh water for the cat, or if a burglar is indeed stealing things from your home.

If it is a genuine intrusion, you can call the police and they’ll likely arrive quicker than if it were merely a burglar alarm which went off since the call is being made by a genuine person. The police may or may not catch the burglar, but even if they do not, the surveillance imagery that your camera will be able to provide will be invaluable to the police detectives. They’ll have visual images of everything that was stolen and likely be able to come up with a very good description of the criminal.

Companies such as Eyes There are making these new cameras and they are likely to be relatively inexpensive. This new generation of surveillance cameras will be a major improvement over the existing alarm systems that most homes and businesses use today
