The above comments trouble me alot about the state of our nation. Some say it was the Boomers fault for not teaching us about money. Others say "its the American Way". I am a Mid Gen X'er and at age 40 I have my finances in order why no debt but my home. Simple fact that all americans need to take the responsibility for themselves and quit blaming others for their bad money decisions. It is your fault, period. My point is, by reading these comments you know what the problem is. You look at it every morning when you look in the mirror. NOW FIX IT! Start making good choices when it comes to money.

I think the Boomer did a bad job of teacing us about money. We were teens in the go-go 80's when Boomers weren't exactly great financial role models. However, regardless as to how our parents failed to prepare us, it's up to us to make things right. No one is going to help us so we're just going to have to step up to the challenge. Also, we'd damn sure better do a better job of teaching our own kids about handling money and savings.

PS- Love the Generation X picture!

I think, it is a common practice to live in debts today. And it doesn't matter, whether you are GenX, Baby Boomer, or etc. All my friends have credit cards, and all of them have debts. Isn't it the American dream, that says, live like a millionare, buy as much as possible, and if you haven't earned enough money for this, just borrow the money!

Don't blame just the Gen X folks, also blame their parents for not setting a good example, such as by using credit card debt as if it was legal tender, and for instilling the idea of instant gratification upon that generation.

I am a parent of GenX. Mine was born in 1970. I knew before the end of the 80's there would be some painful mid-life crises ahead.
The 80's were full of promises, expectations and other unrealities that came along with Reaganomics, the yuppies, deregulation of business practices, and an odd expectation that these kids, aged 10 to 20 in the 80's therefore impressionable, could be millionaires by the time they were 30. The stock markets of the 90's only fueled the unreality. And, they wanted to live like millionaire's. But business depended on these upward achievers as their 'bubbles' grew (the bubbles of the businesses AND the achievers.) Then many pushed their 'bubbles' over into all kinds of illegal or unethical business practices, and even personal practices - following those architects of the '80's myths, the earlier generation. What's all that noise in this last decade? It's all those bubbles popping and bursting!

Or maybe it's because the Baby Boomers (The most selfish generation) have stolen America's future. Gen X works longer hours for less money and with no job security. Most Boomers at our age were earning twice our buying power and blowing 1/2 of it up their nose.
