I have worked for a mutual fund company that was part of the AARP financial products so I may be biased. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;If a person has knowlege of the financial market and products they most likely can find a product that offers a lower price. But many seniors are not that skilled in searching for financial product. In the case of AARP Mutual Funds they offer 4 simple index funds with low expenses of .50%. Yes you can find lower expenses with companies such as Vanguard but then there are so many choices some seniors will get confused. The AARP Mutual Funds are also a great place for someone with only $100 to start out.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;So for savvy seniors, I say go out on your own but for seniors that need simple options take a look at AARP financial products</description>

		<description>Actually, the study about AARP products you mention was not done by the LA Times.  it was done by Drew Tignanelli of The Financial Consulate in Lutherville, MD.  He is a Fee-Only planner and brought his research to the LA Times for them to cover.</description>
