I'm all about paying for the quality of an item. That being said cheap generics are exactly that, cheap generics. Why pay $10 for a pair of shoes when a $20 pair will outlast them many times over? From the business perspective, not all the difference between a cheap and pricey item goes into marketing, some of it actually goes into R&D or QA and really does make the item better. But as with all consumer goods there comes a point of diminishing returns and it takes a smart shopper, not a cheap shopper, to figure out where that point is and getting the best bang for the buck.

I remember as a kid I would buy countless pairs of reebok pumps, jordans, anything with a nike logo above $100. Then moved on to hilfiger, polo, nautica. College really brings the money issue to perspective and you really stop caring about buying the more expensive stuff, and go to the bargain racks. As a working (intelligent?) adult, I realized that high price doesn't make something fine. It's all a marketing illusion. Spending large amounts of money for objects that can be had for 1/10 of the cost shows only a psychological issue, not class. I feel sorry for anyone who would buy a rolex. It shows how someone can live in such a small world and strive (pretend?)to be someone big, while showing they know nothing of what is really out in that big scary world that they stay away from.
