Being disciplined when saving is actually a simple but very good advice. Many Americans now regret spending too much on 'extra' stuff as opposed to necessities when the economy was good. Now that the economy fell of the cliff, saving makes even more sense than ever.

Great title and solid post, if it was a bit more in depth and lengthier I would have made this an editor's choice for the festival of stocks!

The trouble is lots of people will also be millionaires in 20 years time due to inflation, but you make some good points.

Putting things on autopilot is the best way - it really helps with the being disciplined part. Having the money go right into investing from your paycheck is the easiest way I have found to regularly invest.

we have a roth IRA right now, earning an average of about 19%. It is so cool to see it grow. We just max it out each year (I think it is $4,000) but we havent made one fo rmy wife yet (as if we could afford to plunk down $4,000 more a year) but assuming i maxed out my roth every year for 30 more years I would have 1.5 million dollars when I am 60. Now, this does NOT include my wifes 401K or my TIAA CREF i have at work. SO right on!
