I have been using price comparison sites like http://www.thecollegetextbooks.net for my buying my textbooks. It is better than going for standalone stores. As you can save on lot of money using them.

Good article. All I'd add is that using the tips above can (and should) reduce the amount students have to borrow, and limited borrowing means limited debt.

Textbooks seem to cost more and more each year. I suggest using http://www.textbookspy.com to compare prices on textbooks. They saved me a ton of money last semester.

I disagree with #10 and #25. Most frat parties provide free alcohol, and at my university, moving off campus saved so much more money than living in a dorm. Even though my apartment was a longer walk to campus, the rooms were bigger, cleaner, and less costly.

I can honestly say that I was the opposite of thrifty in college. I got credit cards and very smartly (sarcasm of course...) decided I'd get student loans to pay them off because the interest rate was lower. Sounded logical...

My #1 for any and all college students is resist every single temptation to spend on credit cards and loans. If your mommy and daddy are paying for school and you're used to a comfortable life not having to work, change your attitude the second you start school.

I have almost repaid all of my credit card debt from college, but still have $20k in well-intentioned school loans to pay off for the next 15 years because I thought I was smarter than I was.

Rule #1-Do not use credit cards unless it is a true emergency. (Margaritas at Chili's do not count as a true emergency...lesson learned)

I lived off of $100 a month in college. .I have no idea who I did it other than room and board was provided (and this of course doesn't include books) but it can be done. I also didnt drink. And as far as dating went, on the first date, i just took the girl to a really nice resturant, then to the park, and after that she thought I was a high roller and got to know me well enough to like me :)

I also disagree about living off campus, I managed to save over a thousand dollars each semester I lived off campus, and could have saved more if I'd been better about groceries and utilities.

Our local off campus bookstore will let you preorder your books once you've selected and preregistered for your classes. They get the profs' lists and you can tell them if you want used books. I saved about 20 to 40 % over the campus bookstore, avoided the long lines (picked up my books before most people were back on campus), never once had a book that was out of stock and I had my books for the first assignments. I like online booksellers, but I was one of the working students like Joshua, and like him, I needed to stay up to date from the start.

Re: #1, Textbooks.<br/><br/>Buying textbooks online is cheaper 90% of the time, not 100%. For obscure or recently published books, sometimes the school's bookstore really is best. You should shop around at sites like bookhq.com, to figure out where the best deal really is.

I also disagree with living off campus, but you do have to be careful. I lived alone in a studio for $325 a month, which included utilities. I did not have cable or a landline. I also did not have internet access, or drive very often. Since I did not drive to campus, I did not buy the parking pass. Since I lived close to campus, I took advantage of the 24 hour computer lab. It ended up being far cheaper than on campus for many reasons, but I was very careful about it.<br/><br/>I blogged about it here:http://frugalhomemakerplus.blogspot.com/2006/02/friday-series-1-my-humble-beginning.html

As far as buying chocolate for women goes, a $0.75 Hershey's bar is a good way to get yourself labeled as a cheap bastard. It says, "I love you so much, I went all the way to the vending machine for you!"<br/><br/>You don't have to buy the all-expensive heart-shaped box or find a gourmet chocolate for her, but if she's a girl you're really interested in, invest that extra $0.25 and buy her a bar of Dove chocolate for $1.00.<br/><br/>Or better yet, ask her what her favorite candy is. Chances are it's a cheap one (you can win my heart with a Reese's peanut butter cup), but the act of asking and then showing that you've listened will win you more points than buying cheap candy could ever lose you. And the best thing is, listening is free. :)

I used to buy my books online as a way of saving money until I started getting behind in my classes. For me (working full-time and full-time school), those first two or three weeks are crucial to not falling behind. I see a lot of other students who buy their books online and start out behind, never chatching up. I already pay $20,000 a year (yes, I pay for it myself, with the help of scholarships, grants, and constant hard work), so the $200 in savings isn't worth sacrificing my education. I enrolled in college to learn--that's what's preeminent. Of course, perhaps I could work little bit less and still be able to survive if I spent a little bit less on my books...

I disagree about not living off- campus. I was paying $700 a month living on campus (paid quarterly). Off-campus I paid only $400 with three other roommates. The only problem was the twelve month lease.
