Make Money By Collecting and Selling Aluminum Cans (And Help the Environment Too)
When I was 7, I was probably the most entrepreneurial kid on the block, well, at the time I was the only kid on the block besides my sister, but I sure was entrepreneurial none the less! During the summer I would go around to local parks and school on my bike two or three times a week and collect pop cans after sporting events at the baseball diamonds.
I didn’t by any means get rich by doing so, but I made a decent amount of money for a kid my age. If I had the wits then to figure out the best times to go to the parks, and where the best locations were, and were able to get the best price for my aluminum cans, I probably could have turned it into a decent part-time job, especially for someone who wasn’t old enough to get a “real job.”
Making money by collecting cans isn’t a way to get rich, that’s for sure. You can make some money that wasn’t there before by collecting the aluminum cans that you drink from anyway. Here’s how you can do it.
Get a separate trash can, and every time you drink a pop, take the time to wash out the can and then put it in your special trash can for aluminum. You can take the time to crush each can before put it in your can to save on space. Most aluminum can collectors don’t care if the cans are crushed or not.
Once you get a few bags of pop-cans, you can take them down to your local can-bank and cash them in. The going rate will vary from place to place, so it might make sense to check all the places quick and see which one will pay the most. The place I found here in town that collects cans is offering 50 cents a pound. I don’t remember how much I was getting as a child, but it’s better than nothing.
In most cases it doesn’t make sense to go out and collect cans from public trash cans, but it’s a good idea to save your own pop-cans and recycle them for profit. If you’re under the age of 14 or otherwise can’t get a job or just don’t have anything better to do with your time, why not make it productive and go out and collect some cans. Be sure to wear gloves when doing so, otherwise things can get a little bit messy.
