Understand how much money you are spending every month on bills and necessities and spend some additional time researching how much your skill set and education are worth. Generally, the Department of Labor in your state will provide estimates and statistics of average salaries in your area that are consistent with your profession.
When the time comes to interview for a job, ask questions and weigh the pros and cons of the new opportunity based on salary, benefits, and work environment. In the event you are selected as a candidate, be prepared to stick to your guns where salary is concerned. If a figure comes in under what you need to make, negotiate a better rate based on the financial research you have done.
