Wonderful post! In November I moved from a two person household to being on my own for the first time. I implemented several of these ideas, which I also tried to inforce in my old place but my boyfriend is pretty dense. My heat and hot water are included, but I have to pay for laundry in the laundry room. I hang dry several items in my shower and have even started to hand wash some delicates and socks to save $$ - reducing from two loads a week to just one. My microwave and several lamps are unplugged except when they are being used. I also put my TV on a powerstrip and turn that off, leaving my DRV cable back plugged into the wall to record, when not used. My computer items are on a smart powerstrip so my router is always on (for FIOS TV) but nothing else unless its used. My diskwasher runs at night when rates are lowest. I use washable towels and rags instead of papertowels and napkins (these are hand washed and air dried). I pay all my bills online, cutting out just a few bucks a month, but close to $50 a year. After using the oven, I leave it open (its off) so the build up heat can warm up my home. I am trying to be more enviromentally aware, even though I have unlimited heat and water, so I have taken some steps to reduce use (like a 1 litter bottle in the toilet tank to reduce water) and am sure using these now will set me on a positive path of habits for when I am a home owner and need to do pay for everything. I am even looking into getting some solar powered lamps to charge during the day and use at night. Also, most of my furnishing came from freecycle and I am saving money and the planet by repurposing.
