There is a good chance that you have seen items on store shelves that have been labeled “refurbished” or “reconditioned”. To many consumers, those labels scream USED and so many people will bypass out the merchandise in search of “new” items. The reality is, however, if you are walking past these items, you are likely missing out on the best deals you will find for some of the most high-end items.

Products that have been labeled as reconditioned or refurbished constitute a lot of different meanings. These are all products that have been returned to the store for various reasons, including the customer simply did not want the item after purchasing it or the merchandise was the wrong color or size. In those cases, the box the product came in was opened and nothing more. There will be some cases where the product was missing a part, has some imperfections on the surface, or was not working properly. In these cases, the items when back to the factory to be repaired and was sent back through the process of being retested through quality control. All products that go through this process will be labeled and sold as refurbished or reconditioned. To sell it again as new is illegal.

The top manufacturers will resell the reconditioned items at a price considerably less than the price for the “new” versions. You can often find discounts of up to 50-60% off some great merchandise you may not otherwise afford at the retail price. If you are going to shop for reconditioned deals, here are some tips to help you with your experience.

  • Go directly through the manufacturer if possible. You can also find some great deals at the companies that sell overstocked merchandise or in discount retail stores.
  • Double-check the warranty. Reconditioned products can still come with a warranty that matches the original warranty on the new product. The store should also still offer a return policy of at least 15 days to get a full refund. Make sure you keep your receipt handy just in case you need to make a return for any reason.
  • If you purchase the item with a credit card, check with your credit card company to see if they offer any warranty assistance with purchases.
  • Be careful when purchasing online items that have been refurbished. If there are scratches or other imperfections, you will likely not be able to see that from online sellers.
  • Before you go, do your shopping. Sometimes the refurbished price for an item may not be much cheaper than if you purchased it new.
