collectablesMany of us have prized possessions, such as collectables from our youth and family heirlooms that we want to preserve for our children, our grand children, and generations to come. It might be something like an old sports card from your youth, a doll that your great grandmother owned, or some family photographs from the late 19th century. Whatever the item is, you want to protect and preserve it. Here are some suggestions to keep those items in good condition.

Each item that you want to protect will have a unique way of keeping it from the elements and destruction. For example, there’s a family that I know that has some Civil War Letters that they keep protected in air-tight plastic cases inside of a binder. However, there are some things that we can do to protect just about anything.

Consider getting a fire-proof safe for whatever it is that you want to protect. You never know when you’ll be the victim of a house-fire or another natural disaster. You’ll want to protect your financial documents, precious heirlooms or maybe even some old movie memorabilia in this event. By keeping the item stored in a fire-proof, sealed case, you will ensure that your collectables are protected from these types of disasters.

You should also consider getting some sort of plastic case for the item. With flat items, such as autographed photos, it’s really easy to find plastic coverings that will prevent oil and dirt from getting on the object by touching it. With three dimensional objects, you have a more difficult task, but there are still some things that you can do to shield them. You could consider shrink wrapping the item or getting three-dimensional transparent plastic cube to keep the item in. You’ll need something to keep the item in its place inside of the cube, but it will go along in protecting the object.

You should definitely keep the item out of the hands of small children. We love our kids, but there are some things they probably just shouldn’t handle until they’re a bit older. Family collectables and other heirlooms are definitely on that list.

You could also consider putting the item in a safe-deposit box at the bank. This will keep it safe from theft and the elements. Safe deposit boxes are also tax-deductible, so you could save money on your taxes by getting one as well.
