As more and more Americans become increasingly worried about the economic concerns we are currently facing, many consumers are ready to ditch their expensive cell phone plans to cut costs in their budget. Since it seems every American from the very young to the very old now sport a cell phone it is unlikely that people will get rid of cell phones completely. Let’s face it -most of us are accustomed to the convenience and security of having a phone on hand for any circumstance that should arise. So what can you do to remain connected yet save some cash when money is tight?
- Just ask- Yes, sometimes it can be as simple as calling your cell phone service provider and asking for a discount or lower rate. Before you pick up the phone you should take a few moments to think about what you would really like to change about your plan. What do you feel you pay too much for or wish you didn’t have to pay for at all? What features would you like added to your plan that you don’t already have? By having an idea of what you want before you call you are in a better position to respond to offers from your service provider. Keep in mind that you if you don’t get the response you desired the first time, you can always try again in a few days as the likelihood of getting the same customer service representative is slim to none. Different representatives may offer different responses.
- Is it time to renew your contract-The very best time to negotiate a better deal with your cell phone provider is when your current contract is set to expire. Like all businesses it is easier to retain loyal customers than to sign on new customers. The chances of getting a positive response increase dramatically if you are in the bargaining position of leaving your current company for a new service provider.
- Ditch the extras- Before you consider ditching your plan altogether consider getting rid of features that are not necessary. Do you really need to text as often as you do? Do you need the insurance, GPS or data feature to simply make calls? Sure the benefits make life easier for those of us on the go each day however they are not necessary and certainly contribute to increasing your overall bill. Unless you use your phone as a primary way to conduct your business you will probably soon discover you really can live without many of the extras we have become accustomed to having.
- Consider a prepaid phone- If you have tried all of the above and still find your cell phone bill is more than you can handle each month, you may want to consider changing to a prepaid phone after your current contract ends. You may not have access to all the newest gadgets but you will have the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are paid in advance and no bill with be forthcoming at the end of the month.
