Part of preventive medicine should include a strategy to reduce your medical costs before they even begin. How can expensive-pills-mdyou do that? By using the following steps, you can prepare for that bill which will arrive after a medical appointment or procedure has taken place.

Look for the best prices along with service

We are used to taking medical bills like they come and not questioning the charges. Those days are gone. When you choose a doctor, ask about the prices they charge for office visits, etc. Doing this can save you hundreds of dollars if you have to make multiple visits over the course of a year in order to treat a problem.

Doctor’s offices have become patient mills in order to keep money flowing to meet expenses

This is not a knock on Physicians, but rather points to the medical landscape that we find ourselves mired in at this time. Since the day has arrived that we need to help keep medical costs low, it makes sense that we be aware of what will be charged as well.

Negotiate those costs

If you have an elective procedure (not mandatory, but you choose to have it done) you have every right to negotiate a better price that what is normally charged. You can check with a few other Doctor’s offices and see what the going rate is and ask your own Doctor if it can be matched. Or you can ask for a discount up front based on a percentage.

Whichever path you choose, you will find that more often than not, there will be little resistance because physicians are business people, too, and need to manage their cash flow just as other businesses.

Examine the charges on your bill

This is the tedious and hard part of managing your health care costs. When you receive a hospital bill for a surgery or procedure, you need to look it over carefully. Does it appear that you were charged amounts for the things you received in the correct quantities?

This might be difficult to track if you were in pain or under sedation because you might not know or remember. But if you are aware and can catch something obvious then you have the right to question it and ask that a change be made to your bill. Remember that you cannot and should not allow billings to go unchecked if you are going to keep your costs contained.

Pay your part on time

Make an effort to pay your portion of your bill on time. If not, you might find that you are charged late fees and ultimately if you do not pay, you will be turned over to a collection agency who will take you to small claims court in order to get their money. Be responsible so when it comes time to question other items, the finger of blame cannot be pointed back at you.
