Thanks for posting this, I think I requested something like this long ago!
We have a timer on a lamp and just keep it on the timer, whther we are home or not.
We also got on ebay and bought ADT stickers and signs (this is against ebay and ADT policy, so search ebay for "blue home security sign" and things like that. They will have photos of the signs but with "ADT" blacked out.

Also, when you move into a new home CHANGE THE LOCKS THAT DAY!

Also, many TVs have on and off timers, at least my Sony WEGA does. in fact, it has 2 timers, so when we go on vacation, I set timer 1 to turn on around 6pm and go off an hor or so later on a certain channel, then the timer 2 turns on on another channel and may be on from 8pm till 11:30pm.

Also, one thing that is priceless is good neighbors.
We went to church with our neighbors on one side of us and have known them for about 15 years, and on the other side is a nice older couple who we have had a good relationship with since we moved in. They even let us swim in their pool. When we go out of town, one of them will get my mail for me (at my request) and another will even take my trash can to the curb on garbage day and even bring it back so i am not the only house on the street with an empty trash can at the curb (sure sign you are out of town)

One last thing, and I can not stress this enough...
When you buy a new TV, XBOX, Laptop, or any high dollar tech item, DO NOT (repeat) DO NOT Put the cardboard box by the curb with your trash... this tells EVERYONE "Hey, I have a $1,000 TV, brand new, in my home! Watch my house and see when I leave for work!"

Break the box down, fold it, stuff it in your trash can, even if it takes you 3 trash cycles to get it totally gone. Put it in your van, truck, or SUV and take it to a dumpster somewhere.

Finally, as easy as this sounds, lock your doors, especially your car doors. I know many people who had cell phones and ipods stolen from their car in their own driveway at night simply becasue theyt just didnt lock their doors.
