HealthyStuff.org, a nationwide environmental group have conducted tests and recently released a report that showstoxins more and more common household items and products for children are full of toxins, including lead and arsenic. Items that include lunch boxes, pencil bags, and backpacks are chock full of unhealthy toxins, especially when children are being exposed continuously to the items. Even family vehicles have tested positive for toxins.

Testing Finds Too Much
The group tests were conduced to test common products for chemicals that also including brominated flame retardants, polyvinyl chloride, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. The tests in many products resulted in a positive finding. These chemicals and toxins have been linked to birth defects, learning deficiencies, liver diseases, and even cancer. Especially susceptible to these chemicals and their consequences are children and family pets. Dogs and cats have been tested to gauge the amounts of chemicals being absorbed into the body after exposure.

Consistent with the testing of dogs and cats on the results of exposure to common household products, there has also been testing completed on a variety of dog and cat toys. Many revealed high levels of toxins, such as lead, that can be absorbed into an animal’s system as they chew on the toy. This kind of exposure can lead to metal toxicity which can shorten the life of man’s best friend considerably. Not only are cat and dog toys hazardous to the health of a family pet, it can also be dangerous to children. Dog products including balls, chew toys, beds, and even collars were found to contain toxins and since many family pets are around children and other family members all the time, the products become a problem for the entire family.

Many common products were tested for toxins and there were some really surprising products that were testing positive for toxins. Some of these items with high toxin results include:

Vehicles
Car seats
Lunch boxes
Binders
Purses
Dog beds

Many consumer were shocked by the results of HealthyStuff.org’s findings, especially when it came to the results of popular vehicles and children’s car seats. Pet lovers were particularly concerned about the damage simple pet products may be doing to their beloved pets. Concerns about the levels of toxins in common household products make many consumer speculate the conversion to natural products that are free of toxins. HealthyStuff, org states they will continue to test a variety of products for the consumers benefit and encourages consumers to support legislation that strengthens the Toxic Substance Control Act, which is the federal law that regulates chemicals, but which is considered to be outdated. The group is also looking to Congress for support with banning the most dangerous chemicals and requiring that manufacturers provide information about the chemicals found in their products for consumers to review.
