As the nation continues to struggle with the rising cost of everything, gas prices are once again sneaking back up. In just the last week, prices have risen nearly 8 cents a gallon, after having been on the decline early in the month. Diesel fuel is up more than 5 cents a gallon in a few days.

The price raise is curious because there has not been much change in the supply and demand arena. Reports show that demand for US gasoline is still weak. Refineries are also running below their capacity and retailers are stocked with at least 27 days worth of gasoline. So what’s the deal? Experts say the oil prices have been detached from traditional supply and demand reasoning. Sales in the US is still slow.

While gas has been staying within a 15 cent range in increase and decrease since the beginning of 2010, some states are still selling gasoline at very high prices. Hawaii ($3.436) and Alaska ($3.338) remain at the top of the list with California ($2.969) and New York ($2.869). The cheapest states to purchase gas are Missouri ($2.529) and Wyoming ($2.540).

Consumers who have grown weary battling increasing gas prices do have options to save. While there is not much to be done about the actual cost of gas, you can save on gas by following these tips:

Maintain Your Vehicle
Get your oil changed, be sure your tires have enough air, and in general take care of your car to increase your gas efficiency.

Don’t Be A Lead Foot
Driving at safe speeds, consistent speeds and not flooring it when pulling out of a parking lot are simple ways to improve your fuel efficiency.

Avoid the Holidays
When a holiday is approaching, be sure to fill up your tank several days beforehand before prices increase due to demand.

Apply For Cash Back Gas Card
Check with your local gasoline station and inquire about rewards programs on their gas credit cards. Each time you fill up, you may be able to earn free gasoline or even real cash back into your wallet.

Buy Better Vehicle
Fuel efficient vehicles are becoming more commonplace. Check out your local dealership to see what kind vehicle you can upgrade to in order to save more on gas over the life of the vehicle.

As gas prices likely won’t be on the decline for some time, consumers can make the efforts necessary to maximize the gas they must use.
