Toyota Loyalty De-accelerating
As Toyota recalls continues to place intense scrutiny on the brand, loyal followers are backing off in bigger numbers.
Toyota fell behind Honda in consumer popularity with many claiming the bad publicity and large recalls have changed their minds. Chevy and Ford are surveyed to be the next best choice for consumers no longer interested in Toyota loyalty.
Consumer Reports surveyed current Toyota drivers earlier this month and report that 60% of them still would consider the brand their first choice when buying a vehicle. While the number is still relatively high, it is down 10% from a December poll. Honda went into first place with Toyota falling into second. They were closely followed by Chevrolet (52%) and Ford (51%).
Demographically, loyal Toyota customers that are over 45 years old said they would stick with their preferred brand but younger consumers between the age of 18 and 44 are now saying they will most likely chose another brand. The negative publicity is carrying over to comedians who have relentlessly been making Toyota a national joke.
More than 6.5 million Toyota’s have been recalled based on safety concerns. The recalls began January 21 when eight models were pulled. Among those recalled were Toyota’s two most popular vehicles – the Corolla and Camry sedans. The following week, on January 26, sales of the recalled vehicles were halted and production in North America was shut down for a week.
Sadly for consumers, there have been plenty of recalled vehicles recently although the spotlight shines on Toyota. There is a possibility that recalls for other cars do not get out to the public because of Toyota’s exposure. Consumers who are concerned about their own vehicles can visit SafeCar.gov and run a search fro the make and model of their own vehicle. Recalls, safety complaints and other resources are available on the website.
If you do find a recall alert for a vehicle you are driving, the best option is to visit your local dealership for more information as soon as possible. It can be frustrating tor realize there is a safety problem with your car or truck but ignoring it can be deadly. Lawsuits are making their way around the nation against car makers who provided faulty equipment. Check the recall list and make sure you are doing all you can to ensure the safety of your car and the passengers who ride in it.
