Amazon’s latest release of the third generation Amazon Kindle shows that it was a hit by selling out in less than a week. The big success of the Kindle 3 could perhaps be due to the price slash on the e-reader with improved features and is availability on an international level.

With all of the e-readers on the market it is a pretty big deal that Amazon’s Kindle 3 is doing so well. Other e-readers that are available in a similar price range include: Barnes & Noble’s Nook, Sony’s Reader Touch Edition PRS-600, BeBook Neo, Kobo eReader, and Apple’s iPad which is a tablet PC but is a great e-reader with more features than just an e-reader.

Amazon’s Kindle 3 has a 6-inch display that is similar to both Barnes & Noble’s Nook and Sony’s Reader Touch Edition PRS-600, BeBook Neo and the Kobo eReader. All of the e-readers have a display resolution of 600×800 pixels except for the iPad. Apple’s iPad has a 9.7 inch display with a display resolution of 1024×768 pixels.

All of the e-readers have an e-link display. They also each have a touch-screen, except for the Amazon Kindle 3 and the Kobo eReader.

As far as internal memory goes, the Amazon Kindle 3 has 4GB which is substantially higher than Barnes & Noble’s Nook at 2GB, Sony’s Reader Touch Edition PRS-600 at 512MB, BeBook Neo at 512MB and Kobo eReader at 1GB. Apple’s iPad is the only one with higher memory coming in at 16GB, 32GB or 64GB depending on the model (price goes up substantially with each upgrade).

The recharge time for Amazon’s Kindle 3 is 4.5 hours. This is a little bit higher than the competitors. Barnes & Noble’s nook recharges in 3.5 hours, Sony’s Reader Touch Edition PRS-600 recharges in 4 hours, BeBook Neo recharges in 3 hours, Kobo eReader recharges in 3 hours, and Apple’s iPad recharges in just 2.5 hours thanks to the iPad’s powerful battery.

The only e-readers with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity include: Amazon’s Kindle 3, Barnes & Noble’s Nook and Apple’s iPad. The Kindle 3 also comes with Wi-Fi option and the BeBook Neo also supports Wi-Fi.

Amazon’s Kindle 3 also has text to speech capability. The Apple iPad will also read all EPUB books aloud.

Prices for these e-readers as stated in ibtimes.com, “the new Amazon Kindle 3 is priced at $189 for Wi-Fi+3G, $139 for Wi-Fi, Barnes & Noble Nook for $199, BeBook Neo for $299, Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-600 for $169.72 and Kobo eReader for $149.”
