With everyone looking to make a deal and save some bucks these days consignment stores are seeing a surge in business. The standard ways of saving money such as clipping coupons or buying items when they are on clearance still rank high on the list of ways to keep more money in their pocket however more and more people are finding great savings by trying out consignment stores. Is consignment shopping right for you?

What Is A Consignment Store?

A “consignment store” is simply another term for a second-hand store that offers used goods at a lower cost than the same item purchased new. Consignment stores differ from thrift stores or rummage sales because they tend to offer items that are very gently used or in like new condition.

Where Do Items Originate?

Items for sale in a consignment store come from consignors who bring items into the store for review and resale. The store owner or consignee will select which items they will carry in their store for resale at a fraction of the cost as the same item purchased new. The consignor will then receive a portion of the profit when the item sells. In some cases items are bought “outright” in which case the store owner will review the product and offer the seller a lump sum payment for the items. By “selling-outright” the need for further contractual ties are eliminated.

How Do You Save Money?

The best thing about consignment stores is the fact that items are carefully reviewed before they are placed for sale. While you should still carefully check clothing or toys for damage you will likely find a higher quality of merchandise from which to chose versus a yard sale or rummage sale. Some stores will stock only certain merchandise, for example you may find a store that specializes in children’s clothes, maternity clothes or professional wear.

You Can Make Money Too.

Now that you understand how consignment stores operate and the money that you can save by shopping at these locations, you should also consider making money by selling to consignment stores. Are you able to look in your closet and find items that you “just had to have” yet you have rarely if ever worn? Also, if you have children you know how fast they grow out of clothing and in many cases clothes from last season may have only been worn one or two times before they are no longer useful. By selling these items you can make money and free up space in your closet for all the great deals you find while shopping at consignment stores.

There is so much up in the air right now concerning the economy. Many people are worried about their savings plans for college and their retirement. Families are struggling to survive with two incomes and people are left wondering what to do next.

For retirees who have dreamed of the day they can quit their day job, their dreams may be quickly being replaced by fears. They are worried their once secure retirement fund will not last long enough to meet their needs and many of those retirees worry they will not survive. Some have had to cancel their dream vacations or their plans to travel during their golden years. Because of the tight finances, many retirees will find they are becoming depressed by not being able to do what they want as they once imagined. They may also become bored with the same four walls they sit between day after day.

There is a solution that may help solve both the financial and the boredom aspects of the retired folk. Many retirees or those who are soon anticipating retirement may find that by turning their hobbies into a part time or side job can have its advantages.

First, a hobby can help keep the mind active and give people a reason to get up every day, looking forward to something great. A hobby can get people motivated and excited. Many people who have worked their whole lives will not be able to function once there is nothing to do. By keeping active and having a purpose in life, the health of a retiree can be improved and depression can be kept at bay.

Second, a hobby can keep people social. If a quilter networks with other local sewers, whole new relationships can be started, preventing loneliness. Networking with people can be a wonderful way to make new friends as well as create opportunities for additional income.

Third, a hobby can help supplement any retirement income already being received. For example, those who are handy at crafts can make a decent living from selling their wares. Nearly any hobby can be made into a profitable business with a little work and effort. Researching information online or at the library gets one out of the house and motivated to set goals to achieve during retirement.

Fourth, a hobby can help people overcome the fears of life changes as drastic as retirement. Working on something you have a passion for can make you stay positive and not focus so much on getting older and perhaps not being able to live life as you once did.

Tightening the purse strings is definitely no easy task but what if there is just no money left inside that purse in order to fulfill the most basic needs of life. While it’s a hard situation to deal with, there are ways to deal when times are just too tough to survive.

Here are a few ideas that you may not immediately consider when it gets down to the bare bank account.

Find A Second Job – Working 40 hours a week or more at a full-time job may be exhausting enough but if you are stuck for cash and have a pile of debt to pay, it may be on your best interest to take a second job and devote the extra income specifically to your debts. Many retail places and restaurants will work with you on schedule flexibility and there are many employers who would be happy to find someone willing to work nights and weekends. A second job doesn’t have to be forever if you learn to manage the extra income correctly and dig yourself out of a hole.

Turn a Hobby Into Cash – If you have a talent for something that could earn you additional cash, there is no time like the present to get started. If your family or friends are always asking you to bake your special cookies, hem a pair of pants, or help them with their garden, consider how much money you could be getting paid for your time and effort. Don’t worry about offending family and friends by charging for your services. They should understand your situation if you are in need of additional income. Ask friends and family to start spreading the word about your skills to get more business. Print out simple fliers on bright paper to hang up at the grocery store with little pull off tags stating your services and telephone number. There are many full time, successful businesses that started out this way.

Go For Basic – Besides the services that are required to live, such as electricity and water, you can cut down on the other expenses for a few months in order to save some cash. Families do not need cable or even a television to survive so cancel the service for a while. There is plenty of extras that can be cut based on individual households. There will definitely need to be some sacrifices until you can get your finances back on track.

Sell Your Possessions – There are probably plenty of DVD’s, CD’s, books, and much more that while you love, are not doing you any good collecting dust in the house. There may be some valuable items in your attic or basement you have simply forgotten, such as a baseball card collection you have simply forgotten. Take stock of what can go but don’t impulsively sell family heirlooms or items that are far more valuable than what you are aware of. By selling as much as you can, you will not only earn extra cash relatively easily, you will also be decluttering your living space, which may motivate you into a new frame of mind.

Sell Your Car/Home – This is a huge step and one that should be thought of carefully. If times are really tough and you are no doubt over your head with expenses, it may be time to consider downsizing the big things, such as your home and car. Both will bring cash to the table as well as reducing the amount of your monthly expenses because there will no longer be maintenance expenses, monthly payments, repair costs, and such.

Bankruptcy – New laws have made it less easy to file for bankruptcy than in years prior but for those families facing just too many bills and not enough options, visiting a bankruptcy attorney may be the best choice. Obviously a bankruptcy will throw a huge curveball at your credit report and you will essentially be starting over from scratch. Before filing for bankruptcy, it is important to have a plan ready to avoid getting into the same financial situation again.

Conventional wisdom would indicate that going out and getting a job would be the smart thing to do, but instead some people are taking drastic measures by selling advertising real estate on their skin! People are connecting with advertisers and having temporary tattoos placed on their body with the advertiser’s corporate logo, and apparently it’s making them some decent money.

A new unique online community has been created called LeaseYourBody.com. On the site, you can designate a certain dollar amount that you’ll accept to place a temporary tattoo on your body and then post it to your personal profile. You’ll also designate where you are willing to accept tattoos on your body. Advertisers can then logon, select the candidates they like, submit their ad and make a payment. You’ll then be able to accept or decline the tattoo. If you accept it, the temporary tattoo will be sent to you in the mail and then you verify it with them and you’ll get a check in the mail.

This new community isn’t the first instance of selling advertising real estate on your body. For a while Goodyear was offering a free set of tires to anyone who would get a permanent tattoo! There have also been instances where individuals have contacted companies and gotten a significant chunk of change to get a permanent tattoo on their body.

Getting money for placing temporary tattoos on your body is certainly not for everyone, but if you already have a few tattoos and want to make some extra money, it’s an option

Pretty much all of us have old cell phones sitting around in a drawer somewhere not doing anyone any good. We used them for a couple of years and then were offered a new phone when our contracts came up and the old one became relegated to being another piece of antiquated technology sitting in a desk drawer somewhere. Don’t let your old cell phone go to waste. There are now options that will make sure your phone doesn’t become just another piece of electronic waste and give you cash!

A new series of companies have come on the market which sell cell-phones on the secondary market. If you break your phone and don’t want to pay retail for a new one from your cell phone company, buying a phone from one of these companies can be a great way to save money. You might also buy a phone from one of these companies if you’re starting a new plan and don’t want to pay a significant amount of money for a new phone right away or if you are traveling overseas and need an unlocked cell-phone. These companies that sell used cell-phones on the secondary market need to get their inventory somewhere, so they’ve started offering cash for used cell phones that are no longer needed.

The way the process works is that you’ll enter your phone information on one of the wholesale buyer’s websites and they’ll provide you a bid for your phone. If you like that amount, they’ll mail you a box with the shipping pre-paid to put your phone in. You’ll put your phone, the charger, and any accessories in it into the box and mail it back to them. They’ll check out your phone, make sure it works, and then mail you a check. Some of the sites currently offering this service include SellYourCell, CashMyPhone, SimplySellular, and CellphoneTradeins.

Since there are a lot of different services offering cash for your cell phone, you’ll want to enter your phone information in a few different sites and get bids before you decide to sell your old phone to any one company. The price you can get will often vary by $20 or $30.
