Wells Fargo & Company announced their first “combined Online Banking and Online Statement Sweepstakes” that will run until December 15, 2010.

Throughout the sweepstakes period, personal and business customers from Wells Fargo and Wachovia who sign up for online banking, sign into an online banking session, and/or switch to online delivery of their statement, will be automatically entered into the sweepstakes for a chance to win the grand prize of $50,000. There will also be fifty customers that win $1,000 each.

As stated in Market Watch, “One of Wells Fargo’s strategic initiatives is to allow customers to transact anytime, anywhere in order to meet their needs. Through online banking, our customers can view their current available account balances, pay bills, and transfer funds between most accounts,” said Stephanie Smith, executive vice president, Wells Fargo Internet Services Group. “Online statements provide the added benefits of organization and convenience, fraud prevention, reduced paper use, and functioning as paper statements for record-keeping and tax purposes.”

Customers that decide to be environmentally friendly and switch to the online banking to view their statements online only, can access their Wells Fargo statements from a secure online banking session anytime they want. These online statements are able to provide a clear and concise summary of their recent account activity so that customers are able to pinpoint the information they are seeking right away.

The online only statements are available for checking accounts, savings accounts, mortgages, credit cards, home equity lines of credit and loans, student loans, and personal loans. Wells Fargo and Wachovia business customers are also able to access online only statements for checking, savings, credit card, and their business line of credit. Wells Fargo also sends out an e-mail to the online only statement customers by e-mail when a new statement is ready.

Using an online only statement is helpful to reduce potential mail fraud and identity theft. As reported in Market Watch, “According to the Javelin Strategy & Research 2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report, some thieves still get their information the old-fashioned way: by stealing bank or credit card statements from the mailbox.”

No purchase or payment is necessary to enter the sweepstakes to win the Online Banking and Online Statements sweepstakes. For more information on the sweepstakes visit: www.wellsfargo.com/fallsweeps and www.wachovia.com/fallsweeps from 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time (PT) on 10/1/10 to 11:59 p.m. PT on 12/15/10 (“Promo Period”). The drawing for the 2010 sweepstakes will be held on or about February 1, 2011 to award 51 customers.

Consumers have enough to worry about with the economy and making ends meet, the last thing they need is to worry about invasion of privacy and the damaging effects of identity theft. ING DIRECT, the nation’s largest direct bank dedicated to inspiring Americans to become savers, has been recently ranked as America’s “safest bank”. In an effort to stay progressive with safety issues, ING DIRECT has partnered with Trusteer, Inc., a leading consumer fraud protection company. Together, they have introduced Rapport, Trusteer’s consumer theft protection software.

Rapport is a “next generation consumer desktop security solution”, which is used to protect consumers from both online identirty theft and malware threats, including phishing, pharming, man-in-the-middle attacks, keyloggers, man-in-the-browser attacks, screen-scrapers, and session hijacking. Through ING DIRECT, the Rapport software is offered free and can be downloaded directly from the ING DIRECT website.

The Rapport software has been designed to compliment existing desktop security products, even when a computer is already infected by malware threats. The software essentially creates a secure pipeline for he information exchanged between customers and ING DIRECT’s website. The software prevents all information from being stolen, prevents fraudulent transactions from being made, and can protect consumers from entering personal information into look-alike websites.

Chief Information Officer of ING DIRECT, Rudy Wolf states “We work very hard to ensure the costumer information and savings are secure. Our strategy of adding and changing security layers with minimal customer impact is critical.”

The CEO of Trusteer, Mickey Boodaei adds “ING DIRECT is taking a leadership role in addressing the need for additional layers of desktop security software, such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, and desktop firewalls, to protect consumers from sophisticated attacks aimed at online banking users.”

ING DIRECT offers many other services and high-value products including the Orange Savings Account, Electric Orange, Orange CD’s, and the Orange Mortgage programs for consumers nationwide.

When it came to shopping for a bank twenty years ago, you might have the choice between three or four different banks that served your local community. They would all offer about the same level of service and a very familiar banking experience, but thanks to the rapid expansion of technology and hyper-capitalism, we now have thousands of different choices when it comes to where we want to open our checking and savings accounts with. One of the hundreds of banks offering online checking and savings accounts is UnivestDirect and they are currently offering some great deals when it comes to their online checking and online savings account.

Currently UnivestDirect is offering a 4.50% APY on any money in one of their online savings accounts. The minimum to open the account is $1.00 and your money is FDIC insured. Interest is compounded daily and credited monthly. Unlike many banks that have limitations on how much money you can transfer in and out of the account, UnivestDirect has no limitations on their online checking and savings for transfers. There are no monthly fees to speak of and they offer free online banking.

A great feature of the UnivestDirect online savings account is that you can get a free ATM card with your account, so you can withdraw money at any ATM machine. UnivestDirect has a deal with the Allpoint network so that you can use ATM machines on the Allpoint network without paying any sort of usage fee. Since Allpoint has ATMs just about anywhere, it’s very easy to get money out of your account.

UnivestDirect is also offering a very competitive online checking account. It’s not the best we’ve seen, but it’s definitely up there. The current annual percentage yield is 3.55% and your money is FDIC insured. You need $100.00 to open the account and need to maintain a balance of $1.00 to accrue interest. Interest is compounded monthly and credited monthly. You’ll receive $500 in overdraft protection and a free debit card with the same functionality as the ATM card provided with their savings account. Online banking and online bill-pay is completely free as well. The one downside of the account is that they do not offer free checks. They cost $18.85 for 120 checks, but you can get cheaper checks elsewhere from places such as Current and get a good deal that way.

Overall UnivestDirect has a very competitive offering in a market that’s been flooded by all sorts of banks who want to get in on the online savings market. It’s definitely worth taking a look at if you want to open an online savings account in the near future.
